Top Tips for Mindful Job Seekers....
There’s a lot of talk at the moment about mindfulness in the workplace, but what about those who aren’t in the workplace yet? Those who are looking for work and are struggling with it? Couldn’t mindfulness help them too?
Alongside our core work coaching men who are dealing with unresolved anger and conflict, we are also running a new mindfulness course to support people who are looking to gain employment. We know that trying to find a job can be tiring, frustrating and stressful. You might think you’re never going to get there and the urge to give up can be overwhelming. The aim of our course is to help people cope with the anxiety and stress of looking for work in a new and positive way.
So, what is mindfulness? Put simply, it’s about living in the moment and not judging yourself for doing it. It’s about taking a step away from your immediate problems, taking a deep breath and focusing on the here and now rather than all the negative thoughts and ‘what ifs’ that are flying around inside your brain. Almost like taking a mini-break away from your worries! Mindfulness allows you to concentrate on yourself and appreciate the positives in your life – and in the world around you – which can help make finding a job less daunting and more achievable.
There are lots of ways you can incorporate mindfulness into your job hunt. Here are our top tips to get you started:
1. Breathe!
It sounds obvious but research has shown that taking just a few minutes a day
to clear your mind and focus on your breathing can reduce nervousness and
negative thinking.
2. Be
kind to yourself. Accept how you feel without judgement. If you’re feeling
scared, acknowledge that fear and be OK with it.
3. Stay
in the present. There’s no point in reliving past job hunting experiences or
thinking too far into the future. Try and focus on the task at hand and don’t
beat yourself up if things don’t go as planned.
4. Think
about the good things in your life. Feeling grateful for those things can help you
become more mindful of everything that is
going well for you, and help you to focus less on what might go wrong.
5. Know
you are good enough. If you’re not getting interviews or job offers, it’s not
that you’re no good, it just that job hunting takes time. Trust yourself and
your skills and have faith that you WILL eventually find the right job for you.
Our funded six-week course will help you learn mindfulness techniques that will boost your confidence, reduce stress and help you cope better, not just with your job search, but with any difficult situations you might face in the future. See our website for more details.
